Placa Independencia, Girona

Marking victory over Napoleon in the Spanish War of Independence, Placa Independencia, in the Mercadal district of the city, is an elegant nineteenth century square lined with trees and pavement cafes.
A statue in the centre of the square commemorates the city's "Immortal" moniker earned after Girona fended off a series of French attacks.
